While “better than Funimation” may not be the highest bar to jump, The Anime Network nonetheless managed. Still, having only the second-worst typesetting of any “professional” anime company isn’t a particularly laudable achievement.

Leggo that logo.

These fucking idiots hardsubbed their logo over their hardsubs, resulting in this catastrophe:

Assuming you’re actually reading the subs, you will absolutely notice this while watching the show. I am struggling to recreate a scenario where this isn’t the result of apathy, ignorance, and spite for the audience all combined together.

Would not call the encode great.

A dash is not a significant interrupter. Double bag it, or e*-dash that shit. (En-dash versus em-dash being determined primarily by the font chosen.)

Main Script.

horriblesubs-soushin-shoujo-matoi-01-720p-mkv_snapshot_04-31_2016-10-07_15-26-40

Capital-lowercase stutters make no sense. If a name started off the stutter, you wouldn’t put the second letter in lowercase — shit’d look bad (D-david = sux | D-David = decent). Keep capitalization consistent for these, please.

horriblesubs-soushin-shoujo-matoi-01-720p-mkv_snapshot_06-39_2016-10-07_15-32-13

Not knocking (many) points for this, but there ain’t no blue collar detective who’d be busting out some Frenchy thesaurus to describe a goddamn painter’s studio.

Part of scriptwriting is understanding how to characterize properly, especially for the target audience.

horriblesubs-soushin-shoujo-matoi-01-720p-mkv_snapshot_09-56_2016-10-07_15-36-31

Look, I love me some assonance & alliteration, but you gotta at least try to mimic human speech when you’re not playing around on an English-critique blog. “light seasoning” is far more appropriate here.

horriblesubs-soushin-shoujo-matoi-01-720p-mkv_snapshot_11-45_2016-10-07_22-51-33 horriblesubs-soushin-shoujo-matoi-01-720p-mkv_snapshot_17-15_2016-10-07_23-02-59

Keep it consistent, please. (Grammatically, only the second one is correct.)

Fucking hell, what’s with these tenses?

“You have that fancy title, have you done the research?”

Writing is not that hard; even authors can do it.

*demon-banishing

Obviously, this mistake is the primary reason I hate this release.

No, it vanished in an instant. “rotting away” implies a significant time lapse, which makes no contextual sense.

What a bargain!

Though visually abhorrent, I must admit the Anime Network subtitles are still understandable. If you refuse to watch anything but the “official” release (note DameDesuYo has an episode out), you will still be able to get the majority of the Soushin Shoujo Matoi experience (which is admittedly not terrible). However, you’ll assuredly enjoy it less, as your mind will constantly try to shut itself down in self-defense.

If you wanna see something even more sad than this release’s visual standards, just traipse on over to the Anime Network forums and see how well the company’s doing.

If nobody’s watching, how the fuck are they keeping the lights on?

With the amount of staff it apparently took to make this release, I do have to say something seems screwy here. Either they’re laundering money or they’re truly that inexplicably incompetent.

soushin-shoujo-matoi-sentai-filmworks-credits
The Anime Network? Or is that supposed to be Sentai? Or Aesir? Or Valkyrie? Man, it’s hard to keep track of which *totally unaffiliated* companies that crawled out of ADV’s corpse are responsible for what.

Shit, they can’t even é right? No professional outfit would accept an apostrophe as a substitute. Now I’m starting to feel bad for attributing their failure to malice. Time to move on — I’m now 90% certain Sentai is the Goodwill of mental health charities. The alternative would be too pathetic to believe.

  1. Thanks for this, I guess fansubs will come in handy for once.

Hopefully you’ll be making some more of these on relevant shows this season, because CR has been fucking up their video encodes lately (Drifters is a recent example). The CR monopoly should be interesting.

  2. By the way D_S, you missed the fact that the very last line of this episode is missing.

    See this line right here?
    https://period.pw/sc/2016-10-12_19-47-41.png

That’s actually part of the previous line.
    Let me better explain:

    Sentai:
Next time on Matoi the Sacred Slayer,
“I Clothed Myself with a God”

    What’s actually said:
Next time, “I Clothed Myself with a God.”
    Yep! My dreams are ruined!{or something}

In other words, instead of that final line, Sentai fucked up and thought it was the episode title instead. The name of the show, like they have in their subs, isn’t in the Japanese at all.

This error is also in EP2 if you were wondering. Last line of EP2 is something like “So you’re ignoring us? I see how it is.”
