And that finishes up the season preview.

The Rankings – Part 4/4

In this episode:

  • Taisou Samurai – Meh
  • Kamisama ni Natta Hi – Excellent
  • Yuukoku no Moriarty – Okay
  • Ochikobore Fruit Tart – Okay
  • A3! Season Autumn & Winter – Okay+
  • Sore dake ga Neck – Awful
  • Magatsu Wahrheit: Zuerst – IDK
  • Osomatsu-san 3rd Season – Bad
  • Dogeza de Tanondemita – Great
  • D4DJ: First Mix – ??? (Leaning toward… “Okay”)

Taisou Samurai – Meh

(Gymanstics Samurai)

tl;dr: Single-dad drama, and the dad’s a gymnast.

Spoiler:

Manga: N/A. Anime original.

Director: Hisatoshi Shimizu (He did that weird Hi-Evolution Eureka Seven remake movie 3 years ago.)

Animation Production: MAPPA (Inuyashiki, The God of High School, Days)

Every season needs to have its ~drama~, but why bother with this when we have an ef knock-off coming up?

By my own standards, this likely deserves higher than a “Meh”, but I’m never gonna watch the series, so I’ll never be proven wrong. <3

Kamisama ni Natta Hi – Excellent

tl;dr:

I think most of you know Jun-kun, but in case you don’t, he’s the creator of:

  • AIR
  • Angel Beats!
  • Chaos Queen Ryouko
  • Charlotte
  • CLANNAD
  • Kanon
  • Little Busters!
  • One ~Kagayaku Kisettsu e~
  • Summer Pockets

As everyone knows, the title of creator means he alone was responsible for the successes of those products, and all failures can be attributed solely to those plebs he so gracefully allowed to carry out his immaculate vision. We can only pray that they don’t sabotage him again.

Spoiler:

Manga/LN/VN: N/A. Anime original. Like Charlotte.

Director: Yoshiyuki Asai (Charlotte, Fate/Apocrypha, Star Driver the Movie)

Animation Production: P.A. Works

Leaning toward watching this as a marathon rather than weekly. If you can chain your tears from one episode to the next, I hear it makes you human for a bit.

Yuukoku no Moriarty – Okay

(Moriarty the Patriot)

tl;dr: A pretty boy and his pretty crew commit murdercrimes to dismantle the evil institution of the nobility. And then Sherlock comes around and fucks it all up.

Spoiler:

Manga: https://mangadex.org/title/21338/moriarty-the-patriot (there are two group options; pick Cyan Steam, cuz although they’re idiots, at least their translator isn’t Google)

Director: Kazuya Nomura (Joker Gang, Robotics;Notes, Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru)

Animation Production: Production I.G

Watching the upper classes get their just deserts is like chicken soup for my dick. That being said, I’m kinda starting to realize why my doc told me to stop fucking the stew.

Moriarty doesn’t seem to have anything interesting going for it beyond the premise. It’s just “okay, this person is objectively evil, so we’re gonna kill ’em and stage it so we won’t get caught”. That’s fine and all, but I’m not sure it’s worth 5 hours of my time. I got chairs to sit in and ceilings to stare at, folks!

Ochikobore Fruit Tart – Okay

(Dropout Idol Fruit Tart)

tl;dr: Slice-of-life with idols. Japan sure is filled with ideas.

Spoiler:

Manga: https://mangadex.org/title/35616/ochikobore-fruit-tart

Director: Keiichirou Kawaguchi (Hunter x Hunter Movie 2 and some other things I guess)

Animation Production: feel. (A bunch of things I never finished:)

The characters seem fine. It looks cute.

Still don’t care, though. Drop the idols and give me the manager, then we’ll talk.

A3! Season Autumn & Winter – Okay+

tl;dr: Theater boys.

Spoiler:

Manga: https://mangadex.org/title/21879/a3

Director: Masayuki Sakoi (Kaibutsu Oujo, Kamen no Maid Guy, Needless)

Animation Production:  P.A. Works, Studio 3Hz (A3 S1, Gun Gale Online, Dimension W)

I was so ready to dismiss this reverse-harem idol-ish group nonsense off-hand, but then I found out there was a fucking prequel I had to watch first. Kinda happy I caught that, cuz this ain’t a garbage series at all.

I fucking hate theater, and recitals are miserably boring, but I can tolerate people, as long as they’re anime. And S1 had a really fucking good group of guys:

  • Gamer, but in the actually addicted “mom, I want my tendies but once you hand them over get the FUCK out of my room” sense. Also, he’s a salaryman.

  • An acrobat who’s obsessed with triangles (he pretty much only eats onigiri).

  • Pretty boy whose sole purpose in life is to get the director pregnant (there is an illegal age gap here, but that’s okay).

I normally wouldn’t bother watching this new version, but I’m kinda curious what weirdos they’ll throw into the mix.

Sore dake ga Neck – Awful

(That’s only the neck)

tl;dr: Horror-mystery? I have no idea what’s going on here; the information is very limited. I’d guess it’s a short and in the vein of Yami Shibai, given the director did that and Sekai no Yami Zukan before. If that’s the case, I’m pretty confident you should stay away.

Spoiler:

Director: Noboru Iguchi

Animation Production: Toho Interactive Animation (Ninja Collection)

…yeah, no thanks.

Magatsu Wahrheit: Zuerst – IDK

tl;dr: Another mobage adaptation or something.

Spoiler:

Director: Naoto Hosada (Mirai Nikki, Hataraku Maou-sama!, Juuni Taisen)

Animation Production: Yokohama Animation Lab (Miru Tights, Lapis Re:LiGHTs)

The trailer gives me hope, but that it’s a mobage adaptation gives me pause. I’m holding out hope for something decent, but I won’t sign my name to that.

Osomatsu-san 3rd Season – Bad

tl;dr: More garbage like the first two.

Spoiler:

Manga: Just watch the first season if you wanna know what’s up.

Director: Youichi Fujita (He’s directed all the new ones)

Animation Production: Studio Pierrot

Why do fujoshi like this more than playing Nintendo games competitively with the genetically compromised and hygiene-bereft? I will never understand.

Dogeza de Tanondemita – Great

(I Tried Asking in Dogeza)

tl;dr: This is most likely gonna be a 4-minute series. Basic concept is our hero begs girls to show him their breasts or panties, and the more he begs, the more skin they show. It’s great. You’ll wanna watch this one uncensored.

Spoiler:

Manga: https://mangadex.org/title/30590/dogeza-de-tanondemita (Fair warning, this is porn. 4-koma porn.)

Director: Shinpei Nagai (Danna ga Nani, Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san)

Animation Production: DMM pictures (Enen no Shouboutai, Inuyashiki, Domestic na Kanojo)

It’s basically Miru Tights, but with titties, so how can you go wrong?

(You can go wrong by adding a plot, DDM. Please don’t fucking do that.)

D4DJ: First Mix – ??? (Leaning toward… “Okay”)

tl;dr: Yo, yo! Rappity rap! Jiggy jiggy jiggy, say whaaat~?

Spoiler:

Director: Seiji Mizushima (Fullmetal Alchemist – the non-Brotherhood version, UN-GO, Beatless)

Animation Production: SANZIGEN (Black★Rock Shooter (TV), Terraformars, Arslan Senki (TV))

Some stuff (no trailer yet):

There’s no way this’ll be good, but I can’t tell if it’ll be bad. This is the last anime on the list, so I’m not about to research further. Let’s just label this as Schrödinger’s anime and move on with our lives.

  1. Taisou Samurai
“but I’m never gonna watch the series, so I’ll never be proven wrong.”
So Shingeki no Kyojin remains the best show ever? Have you gotten around to not watching season 3?

    Kamisama ni Natta Hi
So we can expect one of the main characters to become pizza sauce by the end? You know this stuff stops becoming “heartbreaking” when you keep using the same formula, but then there are plenty of new viewers who think (insert generic shounen) is the best thing ever.

    Yuukoku no Moriarty
Seems like generic revenge p0rn. If you’re going to do that you’re going to need to dial up the edge factor to at least Middle Schooler at Hot Topic.

    Ochikobore Fruit Tart
I would watch the fuck out of a show focused on an alcoholic, xmas cake, ex-idol. Damn it Japan, not everything needs to be jail bait.

    A3! Season Autumn & Winter
Theater drama is the best. I did this shit in HS and one year in collage and I think Kaleido Star did a good job and capturing the feel of it. I’ll put this on my list to checkout.

    Dogeza de Tanondemita
LOL! They’re doing an anime of this? How could this not be the highlight of the season? Hopefully, as you say, they’re smart and keep it at under 4 min a girl and don’t fuck with the formula.

Thank you for your shit posting hot takes.

  2. Surprised you didn’t watch Yosuga no Sora. I think you might like it. It’s eerily similar to When Cicada Cry. But then again, you’re full of surprises.

    Reply
    • They don’t call me the Thai Surprise for nothing.

Yeah, I haven’t caught it yet. It inhabits a part of my consciousness dedicated to “series I am quite aware of but have not yet seen”. I don’t particularly concern myself with normie opinions, so the MAL score of 6.31 isn’t entirely disqualifying…

You think I’ll like it, Afternoon Naps Empire has a release… Sure, I think I can burn a slow weekday on it. Here’s to remote work enforced by covid.

      Reply
      • The score is probably justified. But it’s one of those animes that make you think. It gets carried by its material. I always think of it fondly around christmas time. I can safely say very few anime have left that impression on me.

        Reply
        • I’m four episodes in and it’s… something. I can’t say I dislike it, but I don’t know if I like it. Definitely feels worth the time investment regardless, so thanks for the recommendation.

          • Just venting here, to a reply half a year old by now, but let’s stop pretending we have lives.

Anyway, Yosuge is weird. The animation was fine, characters weren’t irritating dishrags or anything. The problem is that they took a porngame and then tried to cram all possible routes into a single story. Which… kinda does/doesn’t work.

  3. Thoughts on Higuatarashi turning out to be a fakeout bait-and-switch to instantly spoil the whole series for normie scum who aren’t familiar with it already?

    Reply
    • I’m pissed. Higurashi deserves more fans, and this is not how to get them. The mystery is the draw, FUCK.

I’m sure this series is going to be fine for the entrenched fanbase, but I was hoping to direct potential newfriends to something up-to-date. Now a bunch of folks are going to have an introduction that may not be bad, but is certainly not even close to ideal.

      Reply
      • Agreed. If you’re going to do a bait-and-switch sequel or whatever a fucking mystery series ain’t the place.

I tried to get two friends into it with this and instead I almost just ruined it for one of them. Thankfully another mutual friend warned me before I could do that, and now we’re just reading the VN which is also good I guess but I refuse to believe R07 sanctioned this. He’s too good of a writer.

That didn’t age well. Also good to see you chanced Yosuga no Sora. Hope you won’t be slacking off on the articles this year.

  5. Dark_Sage, you hyped up the fall season, but this season’s Horimiya is already way better than any non-sequel title that was a part of the fall season, which I found to be a disappointing season. I consider Winter 2021 already a couple notches above Fall 2020 with just Horimiya and some of the sequels airing right now.

    Reply
    • Is the description for Horimiya wrong? Cuz it just seems like the kinda anime someone whose daddy wouldn’t let him dye his hair in high school would make.

      Reply
      • I can tell you that Horimiya looks better after watching it than reading the description. I also thought it’d be shit after reading the description, but it looks like it could be the big hit among new series this season.

  6. Watch Cike Wu Liuqi. Skip the One Piece anime (filler arcs allowed) and read the colored manga instead. You can’t tell me the anime of one piece isn’t slow and censored af. Or do you simply not care?
