Hey D_S Whatcha Watchin’? Winter 2014

v. Winter 2014

Archive: v. Fall 2013

Consider this just a way for me track my own thoughts in a regular fashion. I usually do this in a .txt .xls, but figured I may as well put it on Crymore and share it with the few of you that are interested.

Detailed “analysis” will be provided in weekly status updates on Crymore proper. But feel free to chat it up in this thread~

Current Show Ratings – v1.011

  • I’m sure you can figure out how this generally works on your own.
  • Scores are not based on the episode, but my overall impression of the series by that point.
  • If applicable, I will link the scores to the weekly anime update in which I talk about those episodes. Don’t expect things to match up perfectly; I don’t like being too predictable.

    • Mostly because it’s easier for me to justify the complete lack of useful content in the post by telling myself that only people who *really* want to come here will visit the page.

I suppose I could throw it up in the menu bar.

      Edit: Kay, up.

      • He’s asking if the subs for Buddy Complex and Witch Craft Works are good.

        Buddy Complex: Watchable
Witch Craft Works: Noticed a lot of errors with this one. Prolly not watchable.

Both shows suck though. Witch Craft Works slightly less so.

        • Oh.

Kamina, Watakushi is an English fansub group only in the sense that the guy who does all the subs kinda sorta knows English. Buddy Complex and Witch Craft Works are rather generic shows that are mostly understandable RAW, so I’d suggest going that route rather than dealing with the guaranteed mistranslations in the provided subs that fuck with your perception of the show.

Or you can wait for a decent release. If you absolutely *need* a translation, Witch Craft Works follows the manga very closely, so grabbing a manga translation and going through the show that way will get you everything you need.

  2. Just watched Dandy. Would not suggest watching the RAW unless your Japanese is sugoi — the show is pretty dependent on dialogue.

As for the show… if you’ve seen the trailers, that’s exactly what you’re getting. So set your expectations accordingly.

I’ll give it a rating when I watch the dub, which will clearly be the superior version. ~_~

Is it correct usage to put a space before and after the em dash just as well as not using any spaces around it? (as in “Would not suggest watching the RAW unless your Japanese is sugoi — the show is pretty dependent on dialogue.”)

      • Either way works (spaces are preferred though). Technically, a semicolon would be a better option for that sentence, but I like my dashes.

      • “According to most American sources (such as The Chicago Manual of Style) and some British sources (such as The Oxford Guide to Style), an em dash should always be set closed, meaning it should not be surrounded by spaces. But the practice in some parts of the English-speaking world, including the style recommended by The New York Times Manual of Style and Usage and the AP Stylebook, sets it open, separating it from its surrounding words by using spaces or hair spaces (U+200A) when it is being used parenthetically.” (wiki)

  3. From what I’ve seen, fansubbers have a nasty habit of using em dashes where commas would suffice. It’s almost like no one knows what an appositive is.

    For example:

Jark, an up-and-coming editor, gets all the bitches.

This works perfectly fine. But people do the opposite a pretty frequently.

  4. Recently, My Sister Is Unusual might turn out like To Love Ru Darkness in that it’s only worth watching if you wait for the BDs.

  5. So the Wake Up, Girls movie is a prequel to the first episode. That means that there’s 90 minutes total of the idol show to watch today.

Just finished with the movie and I think it was pretty entertaining.

  6. The official subs for Nourin are terrible, even by Funi standards. It’s littered with typos, extremely bizarre word choices and sentences that don’t make sense. I really hope a fansub group picks it up, but it looks like I’ll pass out if I hold my breath.

    • Aaaand Chihiro and Damedesuyo just released their version. Every time I say something on this site I end up sounding like a bigger and bigger idiot.

  7. D_S: How do you feel about typesetting for things like nicovideo comments? I’m curious how it’ll affect grades for Sonico ep2.

      • Glad ya like it. It’s actually easier for me this way, in terms of tracking my thoughts at least.

Though I would like to note that while I stand by my opinions, you shouldn’t use them in place of your own. Well, unless you somehow agree with my opinions on all anime, in which case we should probably be besties.

    • Didn’t watch the previous seasons all the way, so I won’t be watching this one.

It’s not that I don’t want to, but it’s a lot of time to invest in something I only kinda sorta want to watch.

  8. My thoughts on shows I’ve watched up to Ep. 2:

Nobunagun: The animation and plot seems to be direct from 1998 but when MC-chan gets her bloodlust on… ^_^

Zvezda: Lazy-chan is Best Girl. After introducing us to all the characters, can Ep. 3 introduce us to the plot?

Kill La Kill (Ep. 14) – KILL LA KILL CONTINUES TO BE KILL LA KILL

  9. This page indicates you’ve seen episode 4 of No-Rin. The only subs out so far are by Funimation. By your own definition of F-tier reviews, Funimation’s No-Rin is “unwatchable”. You’re ignoring your own advice. What gives?

    • I think you missed the part where he says “I’m only watching FUNi’s version for the laughs.” And the fact that he’s posting the amount of fail in each episode on his tumblr.

      Reply
      • Yup. Though episode 4 was watchable (still not good, but not terribad like before).

I don’t know what exactly was the straw that broke the camel’s back, but they clearly did not like where the complaints were headed. Musta thrown at least one more staff member on it.

    • Well, I’m not really rating episodes so much as rating what I think, overall, of the series at that point (though some series I’m only enjoying in the “what a trainwreck” sense, like Buddyfight). So if a series gives me a relatively dull episode but then throws something crazy at me in the final minutes, I’m gonna be hyped as to the overall direction.

Of course, Hamatora 05 sucked me in with its bold characterization and plot development throughout. And that twist in the first minute of the episode was insane.

  10. I’m surprised you rated the first three episodes of Mahou Sensou so high. I thought the pacing was horrid on top of it being overly complex. The amount of terminology introduced into that show is just unnecessary.

    • The only one I’ve been keeping up with is Kill la Kill. It’s definitely good stuff. I dunno if I’d Top 10 it, but I’m all about it.

Everything else got dropped. I don’t have the time to finish series if they don’t align with keeping the site relevant. :P
