Visual Review

Karaoke.

[Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_01.39_[2014.07.23_23.25.30] [Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_01.56_[2014.07.23_23.25.57]

Opening. The colors match. …sorta. And the font, well… uhh, it is indeed a font.

I hope the KFXer was just lazy, cuz if they actually thought this karaoke was good, it doesn’t speak well for their mental health.

Rating: Okay-.

[Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_23.00_[2014.07.24_22.55.02] [Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_22.33_[2014.07.24_22.54.25]

Ending. Like the OP, the colors match… but the font doesn’t. It’s all so soulless.

Rating: Okay-.

Script Review

Main Script.

[Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_00.23_[2014.07.23_23.23.33]

Probably because “group combat” is some jank transliteration.

[Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_00.57_[2014.07.24_23.00.53]

“This is Incursio, an Imperial Relic.”

[Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_03.27_[2014.07.23_23.27.53]

Hey Youtube fandubbers, no need to make your own “ironically” awful scripts for this show; Vivid-Asenshi will do that for you. Enjoy your impending e-popularity.

[Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_04.06_[2014.07.23_23.28.51]

The Magnificent Steiner gets off on death, you fuckwits. Can’t you fucking innuendo?

“That kind of danger gives me all the charge I need!”

[Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_04.38_[2014.07.23_23.29.47]

Except she just killed that guy. Sorta different from a playground scuffle.

[Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_06.15_[2014.07.24_23.04.01] [Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_06.17_[2014.07.24_23.04.07] [Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_06.19_[2014.07.24_23.04.14]

Thoughts without thought.

His first two lines are supposed to tie into the third. As-is, nothing fits.

[Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_07.41_[2014.07.23_23.34.52] [Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_07.50_[2014.07.23_23.35.05]

“Is that so?”

Seele may be a bit off, but I don’t think she has an ESL speech impediment.

[Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_08.18_[2014.07.24_23.06.14]

She didn’t shoot him; she shot at him. It’s the difference between succeeding and failing, not that V-A would know much about the former.

[Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_10.56_[2014.07.24_23.08.36] [Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_10.59_[2014.07.24_23.08.46]

I assure you, varied language makes for a better script.

“I’m not sure what you mean, but okay!”

[Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_09.24_[2014.07.23_23.36.58] [Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_09.26_[2014.07.23_23.37.03] [Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_09.27_[2014.07.23_23.37.08]

“That’s just the reality here.”/”That’s just how it is here.”

She’s saying that’s how it is in the capital, not everywhere.

[Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_12.55_[2014.07.23_23.41.14]

The current young emperor? Do tell what other young emperors the empire recently had, Vivid-Asenshi.

“His plotting ensured that the child now on the throne won the battle for succession.”

[Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_13.07_[2014.07.23_23.41.39]

Hmm, what words could be used to describe a scheming, plotting prime minister? What would get across his conniving, Machiavellian ways?

Nope, can’t think of anything other than crafty. Good writing, Disney Vivid-Asenshi.

[Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_13.56_[2014.07.24_23.12.24]

  • The cries of your people = your people’s cries
  • The cries of your peoples = your peoples’ cries

Don’t cry, V-A. I’m sure you’ll get the coin flip right next time.

[Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_15.27_[2014.07.24_23.13.43] [Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_15.29_[2014.07.24_23.13.48]

“Yeah, it’s called Pumpkin.”

We already know it’s an Imperial Relic. Why are you repeating yourself?

[Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_16.25_[2014.07.23_23.59.22]

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/bystander

People aren’t bystanders until an event happens that they had nothing to do with, but were there to witness.

“He’s surrounded by a whole lot of other people, though.”

[Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_17.05_[2014.07.24_23.15.09]

It’s the only route we were shown.

other route -> escape route

I suppose if there aren’t any other ministers in the country, this line could work. Wonder where they all went…

[Vivid-Asenshi] Akame ga Kill - 03 [8D585CB8].mkv_snapshot_13.23_[2014.07.24_23.10.10]

Oh yeah, they aren’t in this release cuz Vivid-Asenshi think government ministers should be called officials. Sure gets the importance of their positions across.

Either the Vivid-Asenshi joint consists primarily of incompetents, or the Crunchyroll script is nigh-unsalvageable garbage. I wonder which one their excuse will be.

  1. Their excuse will be that you’re biased, because it is infeasible that a cartel group could produce a mediocre release.

  2. It’s always interesting to see D_S turn into a pedant when it comes to certain groups. A couple minor mistakes will drop some groups a tier, while for others it takes glaring flaws in the script.

It’s too bad you’ve decided to go for comedy over content. Maybe I’m just nostalgic, but I remember your reviews being useful / timely.

  3. As for the edit, this episode was a bit worse in editing than from the previous episodes. I didn’t see anything wrong with their episode 1/2. Tbh, I didn’t even notice most of the stuff posted here until actually looking.

  4. Right, because this is definitely the same quality as Funi’s Nourin episode 2 (which you gave C-) or Watakushi-Nameless’ Witch Craft Works? These are just two very recent examples. I’m sure I could easily find more. Nourin had more errors in its script, no karaoke, no typesetting, and worse video quality, how the fuck could it be the same quality as this release? Witch Craft Works had more errors in the script, errors in the encode, badly timed kfx, and terrible typesetting.

I could find more examples if you want?

Obviously this release is not that good, but you’ve either given it a score too low or some of your previous C- grades were too high. You can choose which ever you prefer to make yourself look good.

              • Are you retarded? The point is that both releases had an overall rating of C-, despite one being significantly worse than the other. I was simply saying that this release was rated too low — that is, if D_S is being consistent with his ratings.

                • Since when D_S is consistent? His reviews depend on his mood, so the impact of some mistakes on the final grade are variable.

Then again, his reviews mostly cover the wording of dialogues and the use of English. For actual translation reviews you need kokujin-kun.

                  • I just pointed that out and everyone jumped down my throat. And I’m not specifically talking about the translation; in general other reviews which had a C- were a lot worse than this release.

            • I told you that’s stupid. You should be focusing on script grade for comparison purposes.

As for consistency, reviews are more consistent on a seasonal basis. That is, a C- for Summer 2014 is going to have more in common with another C- for Summer 2014 than a C- in Winter 2011. So if you have to go back too far to find an example that feeds your paranoia, it’s not gonna particularly matter.

              • >As for consistency, reviews are more consistent on a seasonal basis.
All right then. I get what you’re saying and it’s fair enough, but I didn’t compare it to a release from that long ago.

                >your paranoia
What paranoia? I just was concerned with consistency. If anything, you’re the paranoid one here — did you think I was implying that you’re targeting groups? And I even said multiple times that this release wasn’t good. Again, I just wanted to know why it received the same grade as absolutely horrible releases.

It was just a concern. You don’t need to get overly defensive, D_S.

                • He may have picked the wrong word, what he meant is that you’re trying to hard to find problems that aren’t there.

                  • I’m not trying to find problems. I’m just interested as to why this release got such a low score. It’s not good, but it’s really not that bad either. And I’m not accusing him of anything either, just interested.

                    • What are you interested in? It got a low grade, that’s it, this review points out the mistakes that it made, I don’t get it.

It’s like someone gave you something to eat and you’re like “yeah, I don’t like this” and they ask why and you explain why and then they ask “Ok, but why?”

And last time I checked C was “It’s not good, but it’s really not that bad either.”

                    • That’s accurate. The last time I ran averages on my reviews, C+ was the average score, so a C- is just below average, which is what this release was.

  5. What the hell are you going on about the OP/ED font choice? The OP font is probably the closest match you are going to get (how many ExtraLight Minchos do YOU have?) and the ED font, while not a perfect match, is still reasonably close. If you really wanted to criticize something, it’d have to be the grey bg/glow on the OP (which was probably added for readability reasons but still looks kinda meh) or how they didn’t properly match the double outline and glow blur on the ED.

But since you’re just a clueless idiot, you just end up grasping at straws trying too hard to discredit this release.

What’s your excuse for not having any integrity left whatsoever?

    • I also have to admit, if sitting there for 2 or so hours animating that OP makes me lazy, I don’t know what I have to do to be not be considered so.

And yeah, like you theorised, line0, I added the grey-glow bord to add readability during certain scenes, but it could have been executed in a better way, most likely.

      • I’d be more concerned that those screenshots make the kara/english look pretty unreadable against the background >.>

    • If you’re flipping your shit over what I thought of the karaoke, you’re really grasping at straws. If they wanted to make matching karaoke, it had better match. If they couldn’t figure it out, then maybe they should have done something interesting instead.

What did you want them to get there? A “Great”? If so, I’m afraid I ain’t a miracle worker; I can’t cure your blindness. :(

      • i couldn’t give less of a shit about the imaginary grades you’re giving to fansubs, but I’d at least expect you to have basic understanding of the subject matter you’re grading.

And since you’re apparently unable to pin down what exactly is wrong with the OP/ED, you clearly have no business reviewing the styling.

        • I don’t have the best eyesight and have got to say that it was pretty hard to read….It’s the sort of kara that i feel forced to skip, I hated that font/shadow/color(the combination) it’s pretty hard to read :(

    • You do realize there is no point in arguing why or why not D_S dislikes a certain OP’s or ED’s visuals, because that’s strictly his own opinion.

  6. Dark_Sage did pick at a lot of minor issues, but there were some very obvious things like “Cursed poison from my wounds?” which only makes sense if he’s a monster with poison blood, or “That kind of danger gives me all the range I need!” which makes no sense in any context whatsoever.

Do the people who released this episode really believe it’s better quality than a C-? If so, what’s their reasoning? I hope they don’t seriously think that comparing it to worse jobs from other seasons will make it better.

    • >Do the people who released this episode really believe it’s better quality than a C-? If so, what’s their reasoning? I hope they don’t seriously think that comparing it to worse jobs from other seasons will make it better.
I was the one that said C- was too low; I am not a member of Vivid or Asenshi. I just believe it’s higher than C- given other releases which have gotten the same score despite being much worse than this release. I never once said this release was good, though, or even close to being good. And if the people who released this think it’s anything higher than a C+, they’re either deluded, retarded, or both.

      • >I just believe it’s higher than C- given other releases which have gotten the same score despite being much worse than this release.

And other people already told you D_S didn’t make those so there’s no point in comparing them and it’s just going to make you look silly.
Either way D_S does what he wants, it’s his opinion on how much these errors matter, I doubt this release will suddenly get half as many downloads because of this.

  7. Uh, I don’t know my gaming so anyone who does is free to correct me, but isn’t “group combat” a thing? If not, what else is it called in these shooty-gun-pew-pew-pew games?

    • Though, thinking about it, “team” springs to mind. I suppose it’d depend on the situation as to whether ‘group’ fits or not.

    • As far as gaming goes “party” is what you’d usually use for “group”, I thinking I’d prefer something with “team” instead of using “group” in this case though.

  8. ‘There are a whole lot of bystanders with him, though’

The other problem with this line is that bystanders are generally innocents, but the ones around him were guards. They wouldn’t qualify as bystanders even after the event took place.

So many wonderful choices for Akame…

    • Good point. I’m going to boycott myself. I mean, I’ll still read everything I post, but it’s like… the principle of the matter, y’know?

  9. >Opening. The colors match. …sorta. And the font, well… uhh, it is indeed a font.

Could you elaborate more on the font? I think I can understand the colors (the dark glow affected your perception of the colors even though they actually matched), but I’m still clueless about the font.

      • So just decrease fscx and increase fscy by a tiny bit and it would have gotten them a better grade?
        That’s weird.

        • It got an Okay-, if it matched better they’d get an Okay, if they made it really good they’d have gotten a Good or whatever.

I imagine the big problem here is that most people think that just because something works it shouldn’t be criticized.

While I think the font matches well enough and it’s cool that the colors match and all, I still find it rather plain.

In the end it just his opinion really, it’s like saying you like blue better than green, you could try to explain why but if I like blue more then fuck you and your explanation.

        • The glyphs themselves are different.

Though yeah, using a slightly narrower font and using wider kerning would’ve helped a whole lot, and would’ve helped masking the differences in the glyphs a whole lot more. But as it is right now, it looks way different.

  10. didnt Mine say “teiku pumpkin” in japanese? It wouldnt be wrong to translate the line to “Imperial Relic Pumpkin”. At most you can only complain that it sounds forced in english.

There was another route shown where Akame and the gang are using. “other route” is ok.

    • “At most you can only complain that it sounds forced in english.”
That’s what he’s complaining about. Dark_Sage isn’t qualified to talk about translations (that’s what kokujin-kun is for), he’s talking solely about editing.

      • Too bad Dark_Sage isn’t qualified to talk about editing either.
Or, at the very least, is stupid enough to hold groups to standards he doesn’t meet himself. Like “My recommended time for editing an episode is 1.5 hours.”
1.5 hours must be 1.5 years in Sageland then. Wonder if that means we’ll get the next episode by September 2nd?
Then again, that might be expecting too much from a guy whose standards seem to change every two seconds.
But hey, if Dark_Sage doesn’t spout delusional statements and logical fallacies , who will?

  11. Uncle Archie does have good taste, good eyes, good ears, and good senses. That’s just my opinion.

Meanwhile, as TL it’s not really my position to advocate good English, but if making a statement on varied word use…

    >Okay, let’s begin our cultural investigation of the capital!/I’m not sure what you mean, but sure!

Try suggesting: Now let’s begin our cultural investigation of the capital!/I’m not sure what you mean, but okay!

It’s a small nitpick, but stay consistent with your edits. Using okay twice in two lines isn’t much variation, for an edit.

As far as grades go, not sure what the hype is about, all that matters is that there’s mistakes and someone pointed them out. There’s no relative scale to the absolute fact that the English is lacking. C’est la vie, folks.

  12. Doki seems to have created a v2 patch on their webpage for their first two releases of this show.

If you want to revise your review of their episode 2 fiasco. I haven’t watched it yet myself.

  13. I haven’t watched any of the fansubs, so I don’t know if the minister thing reads really weird or not. But I thought I should point out that the guide book gives the official spellings for a bunch of the characters, including Minister Honest. From the looks of it, there is only one active minister at a time. There is a scene later in the manga that helps suggest this, but it hasn’t happened yet in the anime.

  14. “His plotting ensured that the child now on the throne won the battle for succession.”
Really? No one is going to point out how awful this “fix” is?
