In which case, anime is fucked.

The Series

Koutetsujou no Kabaneri (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress)

tl;dr: From the studio that brought you Attack on Titan, comes something that’s not Attack on Titan Season 2, so who fucking cares?

Manga: N/A

Light Novel: N/A

Animation Production: Wit Studio

I was originally prepared to dismiss this show without even watching the PV (cuz no AoT no life), but then I saw this gif:

Now I have the need to watch this show immediately. How could a show with emo kids be bad?

Sakamoto desu ga? (The Ladies Call Me Sakamoto)

Mr. Sakamiji

tl;dr: JoJo x high school slice-of-life.

Manga: http://bato.to/reader#f469666e35473963

Light Novel: N/A

Animation Production: Studio DEEN

Read the first chapter and you’ll get the gist. The whole manga is basically one big joke.

Top keks, right?

Top keks, right?

While I love Sakamoto, the series has been shipped off to the worst studio in the anime industry, Studio Deen, only compounding the inherent difficulties of adapting a panel-based comedy. And at this point, I’m struggling to determine if it’s even worth it to give the show a shot. Absurdity can only scale so far.

Well, okay, this scene would scale pretty well.

Well, okay, this scene would scale pretty well.

As an anime, I’ve got pretty low expectations, so I’m just gonna recommend everyone read the manga instead. Looking forward to be proven wrong, but not expecting it — I’ve been let down too many times in the past. ;_;

Sansha Sanyou (Three Leaves, Three Colors)

tl;dr: “Doga Kobo can do nothing wrong.” -puddi, right before Plastic Memories & Mikagura aired.

Manga: N/A

Light Novel: N/A

Animation Production: Doga Kobo

I spent the entire PV wishing I had an anime ax to bury in each of those ditz-infected larynxes. Part of that’s because of my guro fetish, but the other part’s because holy christ how the fuck could you expect anyone to tolerate that shit?

I’m out.

Shounen Maid (Hayate, But Significantly Worse)

tl;dr: A clean freak goes to live with his lazy, rich boyfriend brother. In order to earn his keep, he decides to be a live-in butler who — record scratch — has to wear a maid uniform. I wish there was more to say, but that is the entire premise of every goddamn plague-ridden page in the manga.

Manga: http://www.mangahere.co/manga/shounen_maid/v01/c001/

Light Novel: N/A

Animation Production: 8 Bit

I read this while trashed and was struggling to get through the damn thing. Turns out with sober retrospection, it only gets worse.

Everything is awful.

There is nothing new here, nothing interesting, and nothing fun. Shounen Maid is proof evident that there is no merciful god. Skip this like hopskotch (only 60’s kids will get this).

tanakakunwaitsumokedaruge (Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge)

tl;dr: Me_IRL: The Anime

Manga: http://bato.to/reader#a608c6ea332ae6f6

Light Novel: N/A

Animation Production: SILVER LINK

Low-energy defines every aspect of this series, which somehow works to its advantage.

Can’t really say this is a show you can actively enjoy, but I will passively tolerate the fuck out of it.

Nuwa Chengchang Riji

tl;dr: I have no fucking idea what China is thinking.

Manga: N/A

Light Novel: N/A

Animation Production: The Stupendous Chinese Worker Peoples’ Party of Great Amazing National China

Looks like some glorious party leader found a random kids’ manga, figured “yeah, if we copy this everyone will know how sugoi China is”, and then followed it up with the cheapest animators and voice actors they could find. I won’t even watch this ironically, that’s how bad that fucking PV looked.

China, maybe people would like you better if you weren’t such a stick-in-the-mud tryhard. It’s okay to live every once in a while, y’know?

Inb4 I get blocked on the mainland for being 2edgy.

Inb4 I get blocked on the mainland for being 2edgy.

Manga: N/A

Light Novel: N/A

Animation Production: Production IMS

Haven’t we seen this before? Like multiple times each season? Fuck this, I’m done. Off to watch Kabaneri.

Does weeb-pandering music count as anime? Cuz I’d rather watch that.

Hot, baby! Hot!:

  • Koutetsujou no Kabaneri
  • Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge

Tepid at best:

  • Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge (again, cuz get it?)
  • Sakamoto desu ga?

Freezing (not the anime tho, cuz the anime was sweet):

  • Haifuri
  • Shounen Maid
  • Aikatsu Stars!
  • Nuwa Chengchang Riji

All right, previews done. Whatever’s up next, can’t say I know.

Maybe Puck does.

Maybe Puck does.

AnonMKII says:

In the last of your season previews you should list all the animes worth watching so we don’t have to go though all the articles. We’re lazy too you know.

I really like the first ep of Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. It kept me entertained and I’m looking forward to the next ep, so that’s more then most shows achieve.
Other thoughts on the ep: The town deserved their fate though, as I asked the question 2 seconds after seeing it, “what if there’s a runaway train?” It’s hard to feel bad for people too stupid to live.
The kabane don’t seem to be totally mindless, so I am interested in learning more about what rules they follow.
The manner the character avoided infection at the end of the episode seemed rather bullshit, but it looks to make a rather interesting plot point.

Sakamoto desu ga? The jokes just don’t come quick enough here in the anime to keep me interested. They got the tone right, but the pacing just isn’t there. Go read the manga, then if you’re board watch the anime.

Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu and Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress look to be the 2 best shows, or at least the 2 shows I’m most interested in. Macross “she want the D” has the elements, but did not put them together right, at least in the first ep anyway.

Dark_Sage says:

Hmm, I suppose I could include it next time. Laziness hit me too hard this season, but at least I managed to get the PVs out. On better track than last one.

bossK says:

Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge seems like Hyouka rip-off???

Lucas says:

No, Oreki and the club do things.

Tanaka literally does nothing.
And goes out of his way in order to do nothing.

That’s basically the plot of the anime.

Dark_Sage says:

And it’s fantastic.

AnonMKII says:

There have been so many animes about nothing, it’s nice to see one where the MC truly embraces the concept.

bossK says:

that was dissapointing

MZH says:

So, who’s the nominal front-runner in quality for fansubbing Kabaneri? None of the usual legal sources seem to have picked it up.

Dark_Sage says:

The official source is gonna be Amazon Prime Video (lol). HorribleSubs has already transcribed the script and made a release of it.

Your other (only?) option appears to be DDY. Their release should be better, though the degree to which it is, I can’t say without looking into it.

Dark_Sage says:

I can now confirm Amazon is of high enough quality that you should face no issues with watching it through their player or with the HorribleSubs pseudo-rip.

Also, the show is great, holy shit.

Bunny says:

They put up a diff for their sub: https://www.diffchecker.com/rr0ib1le

Seems better to me, although the video might be worse, since they can’t rip Amazon: http://damedesuyo.com/?p=9617#comment-8746

Kirby says:

DEEN is getting some slack cut from me for now considering they did a good job on Konosuba (art was a bit wonky but w/e) and they also greenlit it for a second season. They also apprentely did a good job on Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu and are giving it a second season also? Though I have not watched that yet but I will get around to it at some point.

raest says:

Rakugo was fantastic. Between Konosuba, Rakugo, their upcoming sequels, and Sakamoto one can almost be tricked into thinking DEEN is suddenly quality.

Dark_Sage says:

We shall see. (Deen, plz, I need this.)

Kristen says:

Freezing (not the anime tho, cuz the anime was sweet):

Aikatsu Stars!

A negative review without a review? Sagey, I’m disappointed. :<

Dark_Sage says:

Hey, I gave it more coverage than I originally planned, just cuz you were so gung-ho about it. Think of it as a present. Not a good present, but a present nonetheless.

Kristen says:

Tch, are you like my parents at Christmas? Always giving me what they want to give me instead of what I want to receive?

Dark_Sage says:

If I didn’t spend my life disappointing people, do you know what would happen? I’d be poor cuz who the fuck can afford a harem on a normal guy’s salary?

I do this for everyone. Most of all myself, but everyone too.

Kristen says:

But think of the love and cookies you’d get. Those are worth their weight in gold!

Wait… I get it! You’re really just a tsundere. You love Aikatsu, but don’t want to admit it! Come on Sagey, be honest with yourself. Let your inner fangirl out.

aus says:

thanks as always ds

these previews save so much time checking out shows

Dark_Sage says:

I got you. (>_O)b

Progeusz says:

>hating on DEEN
They are responsible for two by far best shows of previous season. They really aren’t bad.

I definitely trust them more than likes of PA Works or ufotable.

Dark_Sage says:

I didn’t watch anything last season, so…

Solaristics says:

Last season was shit anyway

Welp says:

this season is worse.

yukon says:

Bruh, this seasons’s mediocre animes are at least more engaging than last season’s.

Solaristics says:

Wut. Not even close ;-;.

Ryuk says:

Honestly though, anime is shit.

Dark_Sage says:

If it wasn’t, I’d want no part of it.

Solaristics says:
